Q: My timing belt is going out is it worth getting it fixed or buying a new car

asked by on February 08, 2017

I got to a stoplight yesterday my car started shaking I took it to the shop he said my timing belt is going out when I start the car it started shaking so bad that it was throwing my body and I could not go over 35 speed limit

My car has 152 miles.

The 3.5 l motor in this vehicle is an interference motor and if your timing belt has jumped timing then you may have bent a valve in the engine causing the loss of power. A timing belt does not just start to go bad but will break or teeth will break and jump timing. If you find there is a different problem causing the loss of power then you can get the timing belt changed before the belt breaks.

My car makes a whining noise in first gear
The first thing to do is make sure it's the transmission, and not the alternator (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/alternator-replacement) or power steering pump. Hello - noises from under the car when starting and stopping (https://www.yourmechanic.com/question/suspension-up-front-makes-a-ton-of-noise-creaks) are most likely from suspension components, especially with your advanced mileage. The vehicle rocks front-to-back in both scenarios because of shifts in weight distribution. Worn ball joints, control...
Can i test fuel pump and filter by disconnecting the out line on filter. And cranking motor to see if fuel is being delivered
If you are getting fuel pressure then you may not be getting spark. This is usually caused by the distributor module and coil. You should check for spark at spark plugs and if not then replace distributor.
There is a rattling noise on the passenger side of my stick shift VW Jetta.
Hi Katie. Thanks for contacting us tonight. A consistent rattle like you've described is typically caused by a loose exhaust bracket - which tends to occur when a car is older than 10 years old just due to normal wear...
