Q: My car will start but won't move

asked by on February 20, 2017

My car starts fine and moves into gear without any issues but it will not move forward or backward. It has been making a strange noise for the past few weeks when I brake and shortly after but I was told this wasn't anything to be concerned about? Now that my car won't move I feel like it might have been more than what I was informed. It feels like the wheels are stuck with bricks either side of them. No lights have come up on my dashboard to indicate anything. I have read about it possibly being transmission but seen as I have already been to a mechanic and been told the noise was not an issue, I am timid about going back. Everything from turning the car on to changing gears etc feels normal, it just won't move.

My car has 105000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Transmission fluid is leaking Inspection $79.99 - $89.99 Get a Quote

Hello, and thank you for writing in. Your symptoms are pointing to an unresponsive transmission. When the transmission fails to respond, the first thing to do is check the level of the transmission fluid. If it is low, then there is a leak, and possibly further engine damage. You will want to start by repairing the leak, and looking for signs of further mechanical damage (can show itself as metal chunks in the transmission fluid pan). If the level of fluid is full, then you will need to look into the shift linkage both internal and external. There may also be an issue with the torque converter or the input shaft. Only further inspection will tell. For more help, contact our service department to schedule an appointment.

Oil light is on and my car won't turn over

The issue your having is going to depend on the details of what happened when it overheated. If you were running the vehicle without any coolant, the engine could have reached 280°. When a vehicle reaches this extreme or hotter,...

Car won't go in reverse and died.

Your transmission is electronically controlled, a very likely cause that would prevent the transmission from shifting into reverse and then prevent the vehicle from starting is the transmission range switch. My recommendation is to have a mechanic, such as one...

Thumping sounds while driving over sharp bumps

The only part you did not mention and the most likely cause of the problem is the inside lower control bushings which could possibly be bad. I would also check the steering gear mount bushings for excessive wear. Both of...

I change the axle on my car and now when I put it into gear it does not go in gear and it makes a grinding sound

When a CV axle is removed some transmission fluid will leak out. The first thing to check is the transmission fluid level. If the fluid level is too low that will cause difficulty in shifting gears and possibly noise. Also,...

Car won't shift into second and has transmission fluid leaking. Transmission is a 200R4.

Hello, this sounds like a problem with the governor, perhaps the governor spring to be specific. If the spring breaks, it will not allow the 1-2 shift. The fluid leak is likely not a big deal on its own -...

Driver side window started making a loud grinding sound when rolled down! Wondering what it could be? Motor? Switch?

Hello there. It is possible that your window has become loose and is not entirely on the 'track' that raises and lowers the window. This is typically what causes the grinding noise. It's also possible the window motor is damaged...

MAF change during cold weather with a P01P0 code on a 2011 Nissan Altima

On a cold day, electronics have a tendency of being affected the most. MAF sensor wires are only 5-volt and only have a tiny amount of power, around 15 to 30 millivolts which is a thousandth of a volt. At...

When I take off from a stop I hear a banging noise 2013 Jeep Wrangler V6

Hello - there are a couple of possibilities for the noise you hear upon acceleration: a broken torque converter (internal failure), engine shifting due to broken motor mounts and fan hitting something, transmission shifting due to broken mounts, allowing the...

My car ia leaking green fluid what does that mean

Hi There, This suggests you have a coolant leak, which is most likely also contributing to the engine overheating when sitting at idle. When the car is in motion and the fans are working to pull air into the radiator...
