Q: Mega fuse snapped off when trying to loosen bolts. Do we need to replace the whole battery fuse box or just the broken fuse?

asked by on January 14, 2018

Husband was replacing car battery on our 2011 chevy cruze eco . When he was trying to loosen the bolts connecting the battery fuse box to the battery one of the mega fuses snapped. Upon looking at it we aren't sure if we can just get a new mega fuse or if we need to get a whole new battery fuse box. It looks as though it is all connected together by a metal plate?

The mega fuse unbolts and is replaceable separately. If the common plate was bent it can potentially be straightened but if any of the segments of the plate that bolt to to the fuses are broken, you can obtain a used fuse box by searching a used parts database such as Car-part.com. If you are not sure of exactly what is required, or how to perform that repair safely, simply request an electrical component diagnostic and the responding certified mechanic will determine what is required including obtaining any required replacement parts. If you are working around the battery be extremely careful about the possibility of creating a short circuit. There is more than enough energy stored in the battery to cause the battery to explode (which can blind you) and a short circuit itself can cause injury. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic as we are always here to help you.
