The [fuel pump](/topics-fuel-pump-jeep/) is pumping air Mechanic's Assistant: Have you ever replaced the fuel pump, or is this the original? It started after the pump was replaced Mechanic's Assistant: What is the make/model/year of your car? 1980 Jeep Cherokee Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Cherokee yourself? What have you tried so far? The only problem was fuel not going to the carb. So I dropped the tank, cleaned it, replaced the filters and pump

Hello and welcome to just answer. My name is \*\*\*\*\* \*\*\*\*\* I will be assisting you today. I am sorry you are having this issue but hopefully I can help. If the pump is only pumping air, then there is a problem inside of the tank, or a leak in the fuel supply line between the tank and the pump inlet. If you pull the fuel supply line off of the pump, then pressurize the tank using compressed air and a rag at the fuel filler neck, fuel should flow out of the disconnected line. If not, recheck the fuel strainer sock inside of the tank, and inspect the hoses and lines between the tank and pump.

You will need to have the fuel pressure checked to see if the fuel pump is holding pressure over time and not leaking down. You may need to replace the pump and filter.
