Semiautomatic; friend drove car in 1st gear going 40+ mph, revs up and down when in park, and some/most of the time while in drive or reverse. We have replaced the IAC valve and the MAP sensor, when running diagnostics reads P0505 any ideas?

Car idle is rough Inspection $94.99 - $114.99 Get a Quote

Hi there - the P0505 code you are getting indicates a problem with the idle air control circuitry. Since you have replaced the IAC valve, this could still be a problem with the connectors or wiring to the IAC. There is a specific "re-learn" process to be performed after installing a new IAC as well - perhaps this was not done, or done correctly? There are also other items that can lead to rough idling: dirty or malfunctioning throttle body or throttle position switch, or air leaks in the intake. I recommend a rough idle inspection performed by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost estimate for repairs.

The car starts up and turn off immediately
Hello. I would typically start by checking all of the sensors inputs with a scan tool to see if any are not reading correctly while starting. Most of the time, it is the air flow sensor (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/symptoms-of-a-bad-or-failing-mass-airflow-sensor) or the crank...
The car starts fine the first time, but then has difficult startup
The O2 Sensors or the Mass Airflow Sensor (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/symptoms-of-a-bad-or-failing-mass-airflow-sensor) may be bad. The list can go on. The engine computer will need to be tested and all codes diagnosed (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/how-do-i-look-up-what-different-codes-mean). Since you drove the vehicle for a year with it...

Transmission does not shift properly
This kind of reaction is often a sign of low transmission fluid (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/transmission-fluid-service) or a faulty transmission control solenoid. Shifter lever will not move
The clutch must be functioning to shift the gears, that is you must be able to activate the release lever (hydraulically in your case) to disengage the pressure plate, and thence friction material, from the flywheel. Once you are able...
