Q: clutch or gearbox ?????

car broke down, rac towed to garage, quote £500 for clutch but told it probably is a gear box problem, if so is it a right off ?? car purchase £1,800.

My car has 82000 miles.
My car has a manual transmission.

Without more information, such as the symptoms you experienced, it is nearly impossible to determine the cause of your concern. Usually a clutch will wear out before the gearbox.
