My car died with my key in the ignition. Mechanic's Assistant: Is the key stripped or worn? Can't get my key out, and my battery is in my trunk which only unlocks with my key. Mechanic's Assistant: What is the make/model/year of your car? 2008 Chevy Cobalt. Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Cobalt yourself? What have you tried so far? Yes, trying to fix it on my own at least. I have tried violently shaking the steering wheel while turning the key to hopefully pop the pin. Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you? Otherwise I can't try much else without getting to my trunk to jupstart the car.

Hey Drew, I was replacing the speakers in my Cobalt, and when I went to turn my car on to test them my car died and will not let my key out of the ignition.I heard when your battery is dead as a safety measure your key can get locked in the ignition. My battery is in the trunk which only opens from my key or an electric button to the left of my steering wheel.

You can jump start the car using the remote positive post at the under hood fuse box. Remove the red cover with the "+" symbol under the hood to connect the positive cable and use the strut tower bolt behind the coolant tank with the "-" symbol. I'm attaching a picture which should help you. This should get you going without having to open the trunk. Jump start the [engine](/topics-engine-chevy/) and once you get it running to charge the battery you should be able to remove the key from the ignition.
