Q: Brand new rebuilt engine - gets hot quick, high idle. 1986 Volvo 245

asked by on February 14, 2017

Hey, Joshua. I have an 86' volvo 245 we just rebuilt the motor on. Starts every time, but currently has a high idle and gets hot pretty quick. Our initial thought was timing, but issue has not cleared up since timing was set. Coolant system parts have been replaced besides temp sender, exhaust valves open correctly when turning motor over by hand.

MAF has been cleaned, along with filter.

The biggest issue is that when doing ignition timing, we ran out of room to advance timing to where it needs to be 10-12 btdc. Assuming that, that's the idle and hot issue. How would we get the couple more degrees? We lined up the the distributor at TDC then placed it into the teeth, could it possible be wrong?
