How to Replace a Lost or Stolen Car Title in Kansas

For those who own a car they have a car title that proves this ownership. Keeping this title somewhere safe is of the utmost of importance, which usually doesn’t mean storing it in your car. If the unfortunate should happen and you lose the title to your car have it stolen, or it is damaged, it’s quite natural to feel stressed out. The good news is that with a little bit of paperwork you’ll be able to obtain a duplicate car title.

If you wish to apply for a duplicate car title in the state of Kansas, it can be done by fax, by mail, or you can do so in person by visiting your local Kansas County Treasurer's Office. Here are the steps involved.

  • When applying by fax you need to first fill out the Application for Duplicate/Secured/Reissued Title (Form TR-720B). After it has been filled out you can fax it to the Kansas Titles and Registrations office, which can be found at (785) 296-2383.

  • When applying by mail for a duplicate title you will need to fill out the Application for Duplicate/Secured/Reissued Title (Form TR-720B), fill out a cheque for $10, and then send it to:

Department of Revenue
Titles and Registrations
Docking State Office Building
915 S.W. Harrison St.
Topeka, KS 66612

  • If you prefer to apply in person you can do so at the Kansas County Treasurer's Office. You will need the Application for Duplicate/Secured/Reissued Title (Form TR-720B), your vehicle make, vehicle year, VIN, current odometer reading, and the owner's name. The fee for a lost title is $10.

A couple things to keep in mind are that the title should be issued within 40 days. As well, if there is an existing lien on the vehicle you won't be able to get a duplicate title issued. You will need to get the lien release first.

You can find more information about replacing a lost or stolen car title in Kansas by visiting the state’s official Department of Motor Vehicles website.
