How to Renew Your Car Registration in Georgia

As a driver on the Georgia roadways, you will need to make sure that you have all of the appropriate paperwork in order to stay in compliance with the laws. There are a variety of things that you will need to keep your car in compliance and among the most important is the registration. There are a variety of different registration renewal periods around Georgia, which means that you will need to take the time to find out what your county requires. There will be a notice that is sent out when the registration renewal is due and it will usually contain the following information:

  • The expiration of your current registration
  • The fee that you will need to pay to renew it
  • The emissions inspection information
  • The online identification number

Renewing the registration in person

Among the most used methods of renewing a vehicle registration is going in person. This will require you to go to the Department of Revenue. Here is what you will have to bring with you:

  • The registration renewal notice that you received in the mail
  • A valid Georgia driver’s license
  • Proof that the vehicle has passed the smog check
  • Auto insurance cards
  • The money needed to pay the fees

Renew the registration by mail

In some instances, a person may want to renew their vehicle registration by mail. If you are wanting to take advantage of this method, then you will need to do the following:

  • Complete a Title/Tag application
  • Proof that you have car insurance
  • A certificate that the car has passed the smog check
  • A check or money order that is made out to the Department of Revenue
