A personalized license plate can be a fun way to customize your vehicle, and share some of yourself with the world. You can create a custom message for your license plate that will be visible to other drivers, and choose a special license plate theme that fits an interest or passion of yours.
Personalized license plates are easy to obtain, and very affordable, so they can be a great way to add a little bit of extra flair to your car, and make it a little more unique to you.
Part 1 of 2: Order personalized license plates
Step 1: Visit the Delaware DMV website. Go to the Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles home page.
Step 2: Go to online services. Click on the “Online services” button on the DMV’s website.
Step 3: Choose a plate message. Choose a personalized license plate message.
Click on the button titled “Vanity plate search and reservation”.
Type your message into the allocated spaces to see what it will look like on a license plate.
- Tip: Your license plate message must be more than one character, but no more than seven. It cannot be entirely numbers, and all of the numbers must be at the end of the message.
Step 4: Check availability. Check the availability of your license plate message.
Enter the security code, and then click the “Check availability” message.
If the plate you chose is unavailable, keep trying until you find a message that is available.
- Tip: Since Delaware is a small state, don’t be afraid to try basic messages that you think might be taken. You never know what plate messages are still available.
Step 5: Pick a plate design. Select a license plate design for your personalized plate.
Return to the online services page, and click on the “Place your order” button below “Special plate sales”.
Use the dropdown menu to choose the license plate design that you like the most.
- Tip: Take some time to think about what theme you want for your license plate. You will have the plate for a long time, so you want to choose wisely.
Step 6: Order the plate. Order your personalized license plate.
After choosing the design, write your chosen plate message in the appropriate boxes, then provide your driver’s license and title date.
Fill out the security code, and click “Add to cart”, then finish placing your order.
- Tip: You will have to pay a fee for your personalized license plate. This fee can be paid with any major credit card.
Part 2 of 2: Install your personalized license plates
Part 1: Install your plates. Install your personalized license plates on your vehicle.
Your license plates will arrive in about two months, at which point you should install them on both the front and rear of your vehicle.
Tip: If, for whatever reason you are uncomfortable installing your personalized plates, you can hire a mechanic to come and do it for you.
Warning: Be sure to add current registration stickers to your personalized license plates when you install them on your vehicle.
