Hello! On startup, my 2010 [Prius](/topics-prius/) will make a rumbling sound for the first 5-10 seconds after the gas [engine](/topics-engine-toyota/) kicks in. It sounds a little bit like a blown head gasket, but less severe. Other than something else causing a misfire, what could it be? The check engine light isn’t on and I ran a code scanner just in case and it came back clean. Mechanic's Assistant: Does the light stay on, or does it blink? The light has not even come on. There’s just the noise. Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Prius yourself? What have you tried so far? Possibly, and I’ve tried nothing yet.

Hello, This Is Keith from Just Answer. Just following up with your concern from the other day. It sounds like your issue is has to do with the valve timing actuator. That would explain why the noise goes away after the oil pressure builds up. It shouldn't take that long for the pressure to build up though. So you may have another issues causing the timing issue. If the oil is overdue for a change. I would start here. If that is good, Then the next step would be verifying the oil pressure is good and the timing marks line up. If all of this is good. I would lean towards replacing the timing actuator. But you should have some fault codes. If you do, Can you send them to me? Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Thanks
