2005 Toyota [Prius](/topics-prius/) Hybrid driven 2 blocks and wont start even after jump starting attempts and new 12 volt battery. almost all warning lights on dash are on on or flashing when I attempt to start it, "start" button redish orange, held down the start button with key in for 45 seconds still wont start, even tried reprogramming my key fob. Please help if you can Mechanic's Assistant: Have you checked the fuses? The dashboard bulbs? When you say fuses are you speaking of the fuse box up under the steering wheel or under the hood? Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Prius yourself? What have you tried so far? Yea I'm trying to wing this myself with some mechanic knowledge but not in hybrids Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you? Help

Hello, my name is\*\*\*\*\* specialize in Prius repairs. Any chance the [engine](/topics-engine-toyota/) [air filter](/topics-air-filter-toyota/) was removed and inspected or replaced recently? Do you have a scan tool and volt meter available to use?

Hi there I'm Emma. I just bought the car less then a month ago and I haven't replaced anything in it. I did check it and it appeared to be like new still. We have had massive amounts of rain lately where I live and when it wouldn't restart I had drove thru a storm if that matters. My 12 volt tested fine. Idk how to test the electric battery but when you plug it up to jumper cables to jump start it does spark and all. Both batteries are good. The ground wire on the 12v is good (I did replace that piece). I'm stumped.

Hi Emma, the two things you mentioned could be the cause of the no start. When the engine air filter is disturbed it's very easy for it to not be installed correctly or dirt falling into the airbox. The rubber seal for the air filter must be in the groove, the hinge area for the filter cover must be in the grooves, it should lock down easily with the metal clips, if its hard to close the metal clips, something isnt installed right. This in turn leads to debris clogging the engine air flow sensor and will stall the engine and cause it to not start. Would have to remove the air flow sensor, blow it out with compressed air or [brake](/topics-brake-toyota/) cleaner. Reinstall. Disconnect the 12v battery for 10 min or more to try and reset the computer, then see if it will start. make sure air filter seal and cover on correctly first. Also driving through high water could do it, but heavy rain shouldnt affect it. Did you drive through any high water of a foot or more?

Unfortunately yes I did have to drive it thru a really bad storm with it raining sideways

Now I didn't drive thru water that was more then a foot. It was just a torrential down pour and I had to drive down an interstate to take my kids to school during the down pour

It wont crank over or even try
Automotive Expert
Did you recheck air filter? See if installed correct and if filter is wet. Unfortunately if the engine stalls and wont restart, the engine will stop cranking. Requires a scan tool, to read fault codes, to know what's going on, then codes need clearing before it would crank again.

Ok and how do you clear the codes?
Automotive Expert
Clearing codes is feature of the scan tool. For engine only fault codes an obd2 scanner can be purchased at walmart, or auto parts stores. but it has limited capability. A toyota scan tool that technicians have is really required to diagnose and fix these cars, there are 2 hybrid computers, abs computer, transmission computer that require the right tool to communicate with them. Otherwise one would just be guessing as to what the problem is, when the computer has the information waiting for you with the correct tool to access it. Please check the air filter and report back . If water was sucked into the engine, it can break it very quickly, along with the hybrid battery or any of the 15 computers on the car that can get wet and prevent starting as well.

The damage from the accident may have bent or broken an important suspension component. Control arms and struts take a heavy hit when impacted and can bend, throwing off the vehicles wheel alignment. Have an experienced technician inspect the steering...
engine vibration at idle 2012 Dodge Charger
Hey there. I would recommend taking the vehicle to a local dealer to have the vehicle checked for recalls and also technical bulletins for this engine. what is optimal operating temperature supposed to be? is 215 too high?
Hey there. 180 is normal for your car. Although 215 shouldn't hurt anything if it only stays there for a minute or so and cools back down, it really should not be getting this hot. There are different thermostats available...

Of course, confirm that the engine immobilizer system (security system) is not activated thus preventing the car from starting. Hello - since you can feel this "clunk" (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/symptoms-of-a-bad-or-failing-ball-joint-rear) through the steering wheel, this narrows the possibilities to steering and suspension-related.
