Q: Manual Transmission engine dies while driving

asked by on January 31, 2018

My vehicle dies after driving and coming to a stop. If I start the car and let it idol there is no issue. However after driving 15-20 minutes when I slowly stop at a light, sign, or traffic my engine will occasionally sputter and die. The car is always able to start right back up with no issues but will die again if my foot is off the gas and rpms drop to drastically. I have taking it to mechanics where they have told me they are unable to replicate the issue and are therefor unable to resolve the issue. About a week ago an engine code temporarily appeared P0068 - I replaced the Mass Airflow and Air Filter myself which removed the engine light but the car is still acting up. Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance.

My car has 108000 miles.
My car has a manual transmission.

It is possible that there’s a vacuum leak of some kind of near the air filter box or the duct that goes from the air cleaner box to the throttle body. I would recommend checking around those areas for any rips or tears that may be causing an issue.

Cylinder 6 doesn't work on my Ford Explorer
Hi. A cylinder not working can be caused by several things. Two reasons that are common are an injector (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/fuel-injector-replacement) or an ignition coil failing (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/ignition-coil-replacement). I recommend examining the coil, the injector cable and the number cylinder six to...
Got new lower ball joints. I can't even turn the steering wheel when backing up after the new joints were put on. It is a 2 wheel drive.
This is a common issue when new ball joints are installed and not properly aligned. I would suggest taking the truck to an alignment shop to be sure the alignment is on point. When not properly aligned, this can cause...
There is a vibration in the front driver's side of the truck at 38-45 mph
Good diagnostic work! You've narrowed it to a specific speed range, not torque sensitive, and to a specific corner of the vehicle. I suspect an "out-of-round" tire that happens to be sensitive at 38-45 mph as you note. Beyond that,...

Hi there. Running a check engine light inspection (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/check-engine-light-is-on-inspection) is common place; especially if you have a vehicle that has an electronic ignition system. Although the key or ignition cylinder might be stripped, it is possible that this action may...
