Most likely the relay is bad and when it gets hot it shuts off the lights. If it was the fuse it will not come back on at all. Let me see if I can get you a diagram or location of the relay.
Do you know your engine size, is it a 2.4 or 2.7?

OK, on that vehicle there is no relay for the dashboard lights. They are controlled by the dimmer switch. Tell your friend he needs to check for power behind the switch when the lights go off. If there is power then the switch is no good. Check also to see if there is corrosion on the dimmer connector, clean as needed and recheck.
