Is the a/t shift soleniod for a 97 avalon inside or outside and is it a job i can do on my own?

My car has 164000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

The shift solenoids are external on this transmission and can be replaced once the correct one is identified after pinpoint tests of the failure codes are done.
