Q: Intermittent random faults showing up on dash and I drive system. One at a time. Mainly transmission error and lighting system err

asked by on January 27, 2017

Just bought the car tonight on my way home the iDrive system told me that there was a transmission error but did not affect drivability. It comes and goes then stopped for a short time showing any code. Later on the drive probably 30 minutes later the computer then shows lighting system failure. This does affect drivability as I'm no longer able to see whether or not my blinkers are on there is no light behind the gauge cluster and the iDrive system becomes unresponsive. All symptoms and codes are intermittent. Battery was recently replaced at the dealership. I don't know if that's causing some sort of electrical problem as I've heard that the batteries in the BMW E60 require some sort of recoating to the computer to inform the computer that a new battery has been installed. The only other thing I can think of is that there is some sort of processor failure in the onboard computer.

My car has 82000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

What may cause my car to not crank
Hi there. It sounds like you have an issue either the ignition switch (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/symptoms-of-a-bad-or-failing-ignition-switch) or the clutch switch (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/symptoms-of-a-bad-or-failing-clutch-switch). Squeaking noise, battery loses power. 1996 Jaguar XJ6

It sounds like the alternator drive belt (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/alternator-belt-replacement) (accessory belt) is loose, glazed, or worn out, and should be replaced. A second possibility is that the belt tensioner (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/drive-belt-tensioner-replacement)...
Engine will crank but not catch. .
Hello. The most common causes of this occurring with your vehicle is a bad crankshaft position sensors (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/crankshaft-position-sensor-replacement) or a failure in the timing belt (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/timing-belt-replacement). Both of these will cause this to occur. I usually start with a compression...

Replaced Timing Belt/possible bent valve/misfiring in 3 out of 4 cylinders 2002 Honda Civic
Hello - if the timing belt (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/why-timing-belts-have-teeth-and-how-they-work) was not replaced due to failure (and almost certain bent valve damage), it seems unlikely that simply replacing the belt/tensioner, idler, guides, etc. would cause the level of damage that is suggested. If...
