How many miles can you drive on highway after gauge says 0?

Remaining vehicle range varies by car model. Based on YourMechanic data, a conservative assumption for most vehicles, including Toyota’s, is once the low fuel level warning light comes on, or the fuel gauge reads "close" to empty, you have 30 miles to find a gas station. You may have double that range but you should err on the side of caution because running out of fuel will not only leave you stranded, it could damage the fuel pump which is cooled by the surrounding gasoline. Generally, you should try not to let the amount of fuel in the fuel tank fall below the quarter full level. Keeping the tank more to the full side is better yet as that reduces the potential for condensation in the tank. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic as we are always here to help you.
