I have a HONDA Accord 2010. I have bene informed that the steering fluid needs a change. I thought the fluid does not [exhaust](/topics-exhaust/). Mechanic's Assistant: How many miles are on the Honda? How has your mileage been lately? 130K mileage is 5000 miles for last year Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Accord yourself? What have you tried so far? I have always given it to the dealer from the time I bought it in 2010 till this month. No issues at all. Now that it has reached a mileage of 130K, I am wondering if it really requires sterring fluid change?

Hi Appu. Nice to see you today! I'm sorry to hear you are having this problem. I know this can be frustrating. Appu, does your Honda have the 4-cylinder or 6-cylinder engine?

Its 4 cylinder
Automotive Expert
Perfect. Thank-you, Appu. Please give me one moment to type out some information for you. Sit tight one minute... I'll be right back!

ok
Automotive Expert
Thanks for holding, Appu. According to the Honda service schedule for your vehicle, there is no interval at which the power steering fluid needs to be replaced as part of any maintenance schedule. Unfortunately, I see this a lot lately. Dealers pushing services that are not actually required. The fluid is to be inspected at intervals of every 20,000 miles and replaced on a "need to" basis. This is more commonly done when there is a problem in the steering system that may have contaminated the fluid. As long as you are not experiencing any steering issues, there is no reason the fluid "needs" to be replaced.

There is no problem in driving...just that being a model from 201, the steering as not as smooth as I have on the other 2019 model brand new car. Hence I was thinking if 2010 car has an issue or not and whether to replace the steering fluidDoes this same logic apply to breaks fluid as well?
Automotive Expert
The difference between the 2010 steering system and the 2019 system is big. The 2010 will never steer as well or as smoothly as thee 2019. If you feel there is an issue with the steering, this would more than likely be a steering pump or steering rack issue. Replacing the fluid will more than likely not improve the steering. Yes. Same with the brake fluid. Absolutely no interval at which it "needs" to be replaced.

Thanks! Lastly, from now on, I will give my 2010 honda car to a local mechanic, rather than the dealer. Is there anything, in particular, I should be aware of, before giving the car to the mechanic?
Automotive Expert
Not quite sure I understand the question, Appu. As long as the local mechanic is reputable and has Honda experience, they should have no problem servicing this vehicle.

Can the mechanic use the brand of oil and other materials which dealers normally do not use or advocate?
Automotive Expert
Most local shops will use quality brand name fluids that are perfectly compatible with your vehicle.

Great, thank you!

This sounds like it could be a faulty crankshaft sensor (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/crankshaft-position-sensor-replacement) or a camshaft sensor (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/camshaft-position-sensor-replacement). These engines had problems with both. The hard start and the backfire (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/engine-is-backfiring-inspection) may be the camshaft sensor.
