p0234 is most often a bad Boost Sensor

p0540 is most often a faulty intake heater relay or wiring issue see below.

im not even a weekend warrior when it comes to turning a wrench. would a mechanic typically charge a lot to diagnose these problems?

the diagnostic charge would generally be between $100-130 and the parts should be under 100 each.
So I would print the reports and bring those to the shop. or if you want to just ask for the boost sensor and relay without a diagnostic that might save you money but they wont guarantee the diagnosis. but I can tell you the chances are those two parts are bad are extremely high

i believe it i dont believe mine have ever been replaced and the truck is at 275k miles now i will print this thank you for your time.
