Q: Failure to catch or switch gears, belts turning and car has power ect, but won't switch into any gears. Transmission/engine fluids are ok.

asked by on

Car has been driving fine got an oil change yesterday today when leaving house at stop sign car wouldn't switch gears, it does not accelerate or reverse... seems like gears are not catching but serp belts ect spinning. Can this be flywheel issue or tranny? Wondering what to expect so I'm not robbed at mechanics

My car has 161000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Hi there. I have seen this same concern while I was employed at a Toyota dealership. This sounds like the transmission has failed internally; most likely the internal brake band, solenoid, or valve body has failed. The transmission will ultimately have to be replaced.

If you’d like a second opinion on this, YourMechanic has several available technicians that can assist you with a car does not move inspection to confirm whether or not the transmission will need to be replaced.

Q: Transmission goes into reverse but not drive.

This is likely a sign of low transmission fluid. I would recommend checking the fluid first to see if this does not fix your issue. If this does not solve the problem, this may be a faulty transmission control solenoid....

Q: Noise under vehicle - 1991 Toyota Land Cruiser

Hello. Noises like this can make you crazy, often because they are 'transmitted' from one part of the car to another. Since you have greased the U-joints, I would make sure that the sliding yoke on the driveshaft is lubed...

Q: Clutch stuck first reverse

It definitely sounds like a clutch hydraulic issue where fluid is leaking by a seal on the master or slave cylinder until the cylinder heats up and the seal is restored. The clutch slave cylinder housing is closest to the...
