Q: Chirping noise while rolling

asked by on February 24, 2018

I just purchased a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee last week. Early in the mornings and after work I have noticed a chirping noise when my car is rolling at about 7mph. It goes away when I get above 15mph and the sound does not occur during breaking or turning. I even have a video of the noise for clarification. This noise only happens in the early mornings and after work, so only after the car has been sitting for 8+ hours. It would not happen if I just finished a trip, and then tried to coast the car at 7mph. I took it back to the dealership and one guy was saying it was a heat shield of some sort and another was saying a rusty parking break. They also said it was a nuisance that I would just have to get used to. It was just hard to trust them, I don't believe a relatively new car should have a nuisance that I should just get used to, especially when I just bought it. I'd just like to hear from someone who knows what they are talking about and knows how to get rid of the noise. Thank you

Check to be sure the noise is not also present when the car is stationary. If the noise occurs when the car is not moving, it is likely related to the serpentine belt or accessory drives. Even when moving, the serpentine belt (or accessories) could be a cause, too. If the noise occurs at low speed but disappears when you apply the brakes, that makes it likely that the brake pad(s) are interacting with the rotor(s) to cause the noise. Check the amount of wear on the pads, by the way, as worn brakes make noise due to metal wear indicators rubbing on the rotor. As far as the noise being normal, it’s not. To get rid of the noise, it first has to be pinpointed and to do that, the recommended diagnostic is a vehicle noise diagnostic. If you request that service, the responding certified mechanic will definitely find the origin of the noise and explain your repair options in detail.
