P0211 code definition

Injector Circuit Malfunction - Cylinder 11

What the P0211 code means

  • P211 is a diagnostic trouble code that is triggered by the Engine Control Module (ECM) once the voltage or resistance in the fuel injector circuit for cylinder 11 is found to be out of range.

  • This code is similar to P200-P210 and P212 and may be seen in conjunction with misfire, rich, and lean codes.

What causes the P0211 code?

  • Faulty fuel injector
  • Faulty ECM
  • Open or shorted wiring harness
  • Poor electrical connection or broken electrical connector

What are the symptoms of the P0211 code?

  • The Check Engine Light is observed on the dashboard after the fault is detected by the ECM

  • A failsafe mode, which is a precaution to prevent damage to the vehicle, is enacted by the ECM

  • Failsafe mode remains in effect until the circuit has performance that is within range or the fault is repaired

The following symptoms of P0211 may be felt before the Check Engine Light is visible on the dashboard:

  • Engine may run poorly or die while running and be hard to start

  • Poor gas milage

  • Lean conditions or rich conditions

  • Engine misfires

How does a mechanic diagnose the P0211 code?

  • Uses scan tools to check for any codes that are stored in the ECM including history or pending codes

  • Observes freeze frame data associated with these codes

  • Clears all codes and looks for which codes return during a test drive

  • Performs a visual inspection if codes return

  • Uses the scan tool again, this time to check the operation of the injector circuit

  • If scan does not give any conclusive information:

  • Checks voltage at the fuel injector with a multimeter

  • Uses a noid light to check the voltage pulse width

  • Tests the ECU for faults

Common mistakes when diagnosing the P0211 code

The fuel injector is the usual suspect in a P0211 code. Although this is the most common cause, it is not by any means the only cause. All components must be tested in the proper order and all steps followed.

How serious is the P0211 code?

P0211 can have some symptoms that occur which would make the vehicle unsafe to operate such as an engine that dies while running and is hard to restart. A car with these symptoms should be repaired as soon as possible for safe operation.

What repairs can fix the P0211 code?

Additional comments for consideration regarding the P0211 code

Fuel contains particles that can build up and become varnish. This varnish can clog fuel filters and fuel injectors and in some cases may be the cause of P0211. Seafoam and similar products are cleaners used to dissolve this varnish and clean up the fuel system and may aid in the repair of a fuel injector.

A noid light is a tool used to check the pulse voltage on a fuel injector. This tells the technician if the fuel injector pulse is correct from the ECM. At times, the voltage may test fine at the fuel injector, but when the pulse width is checked, it is found to be bad.

Technicians will use an advanced scan tool that will allow viewing of live action data and more in-depth information than a scan tool that just reads codes. Scan tools such as these save valuable time and give information that would only be guessed at otherwise.
