It means that the ECU (Electronic Control Unit) has detected a problem in the transmission itself or in one of the devices or sensors that controls it. The ECU then substitutes whatever information its not getting with a fixed value so the transmission can continue to operate in spite of the failure. You may notice the car behaves differently, or you may not notice any problem at all depending on where the failure lies. When this occures, the ECU stores codes for the failed components that can be read by a technician with the appropriate scanner. In that way the technician knows where to go with the diagnostic process. You can contact Your Mechanic to have a technician come to your home or office to diagnose your transmission problem and let you know what can be done about it.
