Q: Q: Truck wont start

asked by on

I have changed the battery and the starter in the past week...today while attempting to start my truck it backfired twice....now it wont start...what could be the problem?
My car has an automatic transmission.

Hi There, This may be related to many different possibilities, some of which may be related to a lack of spark and some of which may be related to a fuel delivery problem or a combination of both. Things like ignition coils, crankshaft position sensor, spark plugs, spark plug wires or ignition module are all components that may cause the motor to not produce the spark needed to ignite the fuel in the motor. This can often times produce a backfiring result as you have described.

In the case of a fuel delivery problem, this may be related to low fuel pressure, faulty or dirty fuel injectors, a faulty or dirty idle air control valve (this relays information about air intake to the computer which makes fuel adjustments), or potentially a faulty fuel pressure regulator or fuel pump. Fuel delivery problems will typically not allow the proper amount of fuel to be delivered to the cylinders which results in a lean fuel condition which can cause backfiring or simply cause the motor not to start as a result of fuel starvation. I would recommend having an expert from YourMechanic come to your location to diagnose and inspect your vehicle.

Q: My truck won't start. I put a new fuel pump, cam shaft sensor, cleaned my crank sensor, and put a new battery in it. It will crank but not start.

Check the exhaust system for any leaks before the oxygen sensors. This can contribute to having more oxygen in the exhaust stream causing the sensors to register a false reading. If there is no leaks in the exhaust, then check...

Q: Gmc jimmy started sounding like a go kart even louder upon accelerating.

Hello, thank you for writing in. The increase in engine noise is very likely due to an exhaust leak. As with my own personal S10 at this age, the exhaust manifold gaskets are the first to go. You may also...

It certainly sounds like you are on the right track. I would recommend replacing the ECM to determine if it resolves the issue. I would also recommend checking the circuitry near this computer to be sure that no wiring problems...
