Q: Idle high at start up then drops down slowly

asked by on March 29, 2017

When starting truck for first time of the day idle reaches 2000 rpm and slowly drops down to normal after a minute or two. Is this normal or an underlying issue that needs attention?
My car has a manual transmission.

Hi there. Typically when an engine starts up for the first time, the engine’s RPM speed will be increased slightly to allow the motor and other operating systems to warm up to operating temperature sooner. In some cases, a vacuum leak or faulty idle control valve will cause the RPM to be accelerated for longer periods of time. However, if the RPM goes down after a few minutes, it should be fine.
