Q: I had struts replaced and was told they are bad. What could cause that?

asked by on February 12, 2018

I had my struts replaced 10 months ago but 6 months ago, I heard knocking. A mechanic told me that the struts were bad (new ones). I called the shop that did them and was told their labor is not guaranteed past 6 mths and they will see if something else caused the problem and that struts do not go bad that quickly. Is that true? What could cause struts to go bad so quickly?

My car has 105000 miles.

Brakes, Steering and Suspension Inspection $94.99 - $114.99 Get a Quote

Strut service life, in miles, is somewhat variable due to differences in product quality, vehicle operating conditions, and so forth. However, if a strut fails prior to 50,000 miles of service, the causes are typically: 1) product/design/manufacturing defect; 2) extreme vehicle operating conditions; 3) installation error including missing strut boot; and 4) impact damage to the suspension due to vehicle crash. If you desire, YourMechanic can inspect the vehicle and give you a conclusive finding as to the condition of the struts and, as well, the origin of the noise. The recommended service to request is a vehicle suspension inspection. If you request that service, the responding certified mechanic will get this issue diagnosed and resolved, right at your location. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic because we want you to make the most of your repair dollars and help you to get the best possible results.
