Q: gear gtting stuck

asked by on

what could be the cause of the putting the car into reverse but wen I press on the gas to go it gets stuck like it wont go or sometimes il put it into reverse and it will jump

My car has 18900 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

The shift linkage adjustment should be checked to determine if the manual lever/shaft is securely in the reverse "detent". Also, the transmission fluid level should be checked. Delayed shifting or delayed movement in reverse, or harsh shifting into reverse, can be caused by valve body problems, a poor seal on the reverse apply servo, a worn reverse boost valve and sleeve, a partially blown channel plate gasket, or overall low line pressure conditions. Most of these issues are best addressed during a transmission rebuild as if these issues exist, there is likely to be enough wear elsewhere in the transmission to warrant a rebuild. Of course, there is also a possibility of an engine management or controls issue and that should be considered. If you want a shift diagnostic, performed by a certified Mechanic dispatched by YourMechanic right to your location, please request a difficulty in shifting diagnostic and the responding certified mechanic will get this resolved for you. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic as we are always here to help you.
