The Traveler’s Guide to Driving in Switzerland

Switzerland is a gorgeous country, and there are many different places to visit and things to do when you use this area. The landscapes are stunning, and you may want to visit places such as Lake Luzern, Lake Geneva, Mount Pilatus and the famous Matterhorn. Chateau de Chillon, the Chapel Bridge, and First, which is in Grindelwald, could be beckoning to you as well.

Renting a vehicle in Switzerland

There are many sights to see in Switzerland, and it can be difficult to experience everything you would like if you are only able to rely on public transportation. Having a rental car will make it much easier for you to visit all of the places that you would like to see on your own schedule.

The minimum age to drive in Switzerland is 18 years old. You are required to have a warning triangle in the vehicle. It is recommended to have a first aid kit, reflective vest, and fire extinguisher, but they are not required. When you rent a vehicle, make sure the rental agency ensures that it has the warning triangle at least. The vehicle you rent should also have a sticker on the windshield, which indicates that the owner, or the rental company in this case, has paid the annual motorway tax. Also, be sure to get the phone number and emergency contact information for the rental agency just to be on the safe side. You also need to carry your license, passport, and rental papers.

Road conditions and safety

The road in Switzerland are in good condition overall, especially in the more heavily populated areas. There are no major issues, such as rough roads, and potholes. However, during the winter, you will need to take extra precautions because snow and ice may cover the roadways.

You need to be aware of some differences when driving in Switzerland. You are not allowed to turn right at red lights. You are also required to keep your headlights on during the daytime. In Switzerland, people will usually turn off their vehicles while they are waiting at train crossings and at stop lights. Drivers can only use their mobile phones if they have a hands-free device.

Most of the drivers in the country are courteous and they will follow the rules of the road. It is still a good idea to drive defensively so you can be ready for anything that happens. Keep in mind that police vehicles, fire engines, ambulances, trams, and buses will always have the right of way over passenger vehicles.

Speed limit

You should always follow the posted speed limit signs, which will be in kilometers per hour. The following are the typically speed limits for different types of roads.

  • In town – 50 km/h
  • Open roads – 80 km/h
  • Motorways – 120 km/h

There are plenty of things to enjoy in Switzerland. The mountains, the history, the food, and the culture help to make this an ideal vacation spot. Having a reliable rental car will make getting to and from all of the places you want to visit much easier.
