P2015 trouble code definition

P2015 is a generic OBD2 diagnostic trouble code point at a malfunction with the intake manifold runner position circuit.

This code is similar to P2005, P2006, P2007, P2008, P2009, P2010 and P2013.

What the P2015 code means

The P2015 code means that there is out of range performance from the bank 1 intake manifold runner position sensor. When this occurs, the ECU detects the out of range performance as it is looking for a specific values and when they are not seen the DTC P2015 is set. This causes a failsafe mode to be enabled which will remain till normal operation is found or the code is repaired.

What causes the P2015 code?

  • Intake manifold runner position sensor is faulty
  • Open or short in the wiring harness
  • Electrical connection that is poor or cutting out
  • Intake manifold runner is stuck

What are the symptoms of the P2015 code?

Most vehicles will exhibit the Check Engine Light and that will be the only symptom. In some vehicles the engine may idle poorly and have a lack of power under acceleration.

How does a mechanic diagnose the P2015 code?

  • The first step is hooking up a scan tool to check for any codes stored in the ECU, with any of the codes will be the DTC freeze frame data which tells us the engine coolant temp, vehicle speed, RPM, load and etc.

  • Codes will then be cleared and a test drive performed. On this test drive the technician will do their best to have similar conditions to the freeze frame data.

  • Next, a visual inspection will be performed looking for any damaged or broken wiring or components.

  • Then a scan tool will be used to monitor the manifold runner position sensor readings while the runner position is changed.

Common mistakes when diagnosing the P2015 code

Mistakes are commonly made when steps are not completed in the order they are in or when components are not diagnosed before they are replaced just because it is the most likely cause. This leads to good parts being replaced and the malfunction not being resolved.

How serious is the P2015 code?

The P2015 is generally a minor code without any long term effects once repaired. It should not be a problem to drive to a safe location once the P2015 code has been set.

What repairs can fix the P2015 code?

Additional comments for consideration regarding the P2015 code

An advanced scan tool is need to diagnose the P2015 code. Technicians will view the position sensor data and its changes as the drive conditions change. This is something that would not be possible on lesser scan tools or a multimeter.
