Engine misfires can be caused by many different problems and are generally caused by either a spark or fuel issue or in some cases, a combination of both. Spark related problems generally will result from things like ignition coils, crankshaft position sensor, spark plugs, spark plug wires or ignition modules not working properly.

When the misfire results from a fuel related issue, this is commonly related to a lean fuel condition (lack of sufficient fuel supply to the motor). Fuel related misfires can be caused by many different things such as low fuel pressure, faulty or dirty fuel injectors, a faulty O2 sensor, a dirty or failing mass air flow sensor, a faulty or dirty idle air control valve or a vacuum or intake leak. When the fuel supplied to the combustion chamber is insufficient, this results in an ignition (spark) that is igniting a less than balanced load of fuel and air. This results in a misfire or an explosion in the cylinder that is much less powerful than the other cylinders. This creates a loss of power that resonates throughout the motor additionally causing other problems with ignition and fuel timing. Due to the number of different things that may cause an engine misfire, the quickest and easiest way to diagnose this type of problem is to hook the vehicle up to a scanning tool which will download any potential fault codes that may have registered in the vehicle’s computer as a result of the poor running condition. I would recommend having an expert from YourMechanic come to your location to diagnose your misfiring problem.

Speedometer 5 MPH too slow
Speedometer issues are not very common and sometimes can be caused by things we do. For example replacing the tires. Tires need to be replaced with tires of the exact same size because that is the size that is programmed...
Car sputters when 1st press on gas
You should have the computer tested and fuel pressure tested to help isolate the problem. You may have a fuel or ignition related problem that needs to be isolated first. The igniter or coil may be not supplying enough spark...
Can you drive with only 2 lug nuts instead of 3?
Hi thanks for your question. My advice is that this is very dangerous and the car should not be driven with only 2 lug nuts. If any of the remaining two were to also snap, this would cause catastrophic damage...
Suddenly starter doesnot work and after few minutes again it works
I would recommend replacing the starter relay in the engine compartment's junction box. The relay may have intermittent relay contact issues. The relay may not be the cause but is the least cost alternative to being stranded in the future....
Transmission shifts up and down randomly.
Hi There, What you are describing sounds like possibly a bad speed sensor or potentially a faulty transmission control module, which also controls the speed sensors. The transmission control module has various sensors such as vehicle speed sensors, wheel speed...
ABS light is on
Your car is equipped with wheel speed sensors at each of the four wheels which monitor wheel speed while relaying this information simultaneously to the ABS and traction control system which are controlled by the car's ECU. When the ECU...
Car only drives in first and reverse
What you are describing may be a result of a faulty speed sensor, potentially low transmission fluid (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/transmission-fluid-service) or a even a faulty transmission control solenoid. As your vehicle travels down the road, the computer analyzes data being sent by...
Car cabin smells of AC refrigerant at times and now the AC is not cooling after about a month of filling it .
If you have detected a refrigerant and oil mist in the cabin, then an evaporator "area" leak is likely. However, any time there is one leak, the entire system should be pressurized (whether pre or post repair) and tested for...
While driving my car will shut off if you start it again it will act like it's flooded for about 10 minutes then will start?
You should get the fuel pressure checked and the computer scanned. If running too rich then your fuel pressure may be too high or you have a leaking injector. A computer test will tell you if you have a sensor...
