Q: Is the felt seal in a dodge 318 timing cover set needed?

asked by on

had coolant leaking around the timing cover so i am replacing the gasket and seal.. there is a felt circle in the gasket set. just wondered if there was a specific reason or place for it?? Thank you!!!

The felt seal would be used inside the front timing cover in front of the seal as an addition to reduce the amount of seal leakage when the engine is not running and to help keep out excess dirt for damaging the oil seal . Not all engines will use the felt seal.
