It’s never a great feeling to lose something of importance, or worse yet have it stolen. So what if that item is your car title? Your car title is what proves you are the owner of your vehicle, and gives you the right to transfer the ownership or sell it. The good news is that if your title should go missing or get stolen, you can have a duplicate car title made.
For those who live in the state of Texas, this duplicate car title can be obtained through the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). In order to apply for a duplicate title, all of the owners must sign the application. Should your car happen to have a lien on it, the application will actually need to be submitted by the lienholder. You have the option of applying for a duplicate car title in person, or by mail. Here is a look at the steps involved.
In person
Begin by filling out the Application for a Certified Copy of Certificate of Title (Form VTR-34).
Take your form, as well as valid photo ID, to your local regional service center office.
There is a fee of $5.45 for the duplicate car title, which can be paid by money order, cashier's check, check, or in cash.
By mail
If you opt to choose the mail route, you will still need to begin by filling out Form VTR-34.
Within your package include a photocopy of valid photo ID.
Submit a fee of $2 in the form of a cashier's check, money order, or check.
