How to Replace a Lost or Stolen Car Title in New Mexico

When it comes to your vehicle one of the most important, if not the most important document you need to keep track of is your car title. This title is what proves you are the registered owner. This makes it possible to transfer ownership of your car, sell your car, and also register it in another state. With that said misplacing it can happen, that and having it stolen. Should either of these happen it’s important to take the steps necessary to obtain a duplicate car title.

In the state of New Mexico when you lose or have your car title stolen, you can take steps to have a duplicate made through the New Mexico DMV office. The process is quite simple and is outlined below.

  • The duplicate car title will only be given to the vehicle's registered owner, successor in interest, legal owner, or legal representative.

  • If you happen to be a new resident of the state, you will have to take your completed application to the MVD (Motor Vehicle Division) field office in person.

  • For others, who aren't new residents, you can apply in person at the local NM DMV office or by mail. The process involves filling out the Application For Duplicate Certificate of Title (Form MVD-10901). There is a fee involved, which is outlined on the form. You will also need your current registration, and your driver's license. You can either take all this information to, or mail it to your local NM DMV office.

You can find more information about replacing a lost or stolen car title in New Mexico by visiting the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles site.
