How Much Does a Mechanic Make in Texas?

If you have been looking at automotive technician jobs and are thinking about getting the training you need to actually apply for them, you may also be wondering just how much you could make. They say everything is bigger in Texas, and that tends to be true when it comes to the average salary for mechanics in the state. When compared with a number of other states, Texas has a higher wage for auto mechanics.

First, let’s look at the average wage across the nation. The median annual wage will vary across the country from around $31,000 per year to $41,000 per year. There are variances based on the location, as well as the amount of training and certification that a mechanic has. However, in the state of Texas, the mean annual wage is $41,440. Some mechanics in the state are able to make close to $65,000 per year. Again, this tends to be based on their skill and certifications.

Getting the training you need

Before you get a job as a mechanic in Texas, you need to have some training so you know what you’re doing in the garage. There are a number of different ways to get the training needed. In some cases, people may go to a vocational school. Some may even start this vocational training while they are in high school. Others may go to a community college that offers the programs. There are also specialty schools available.

In fact, one of the most popular of these specialty schools is called UTI, or the Universal Technical Institute. They have two campuses located in Texas. One of them is located in Dallas/Fort Worth, and the other is located in Houston. They have a 51-week course available that covers everything from the very basics about engine systems all the way through computerized inclusion controls and everything in between. This school and others like it have the potential to provide you with all the training you need to get started in the field.

Advanced training could bring more money

While being able to get one of the basic training auto technician jobs in the state of Texas, you will also want to look into getting more certifications as well. These additional certifications have the potential to increase the amount of money you can make, and they can make you more valuable to employers. ASE certifications are available from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence in nine areas. Those who pass their certification for each of the areas then become an ASE Master Technician. This can help to make you be a better candidate when you are looking for a job.

The areas of certification include brakes, engine repair, heating and air-conditioning, suspension and steering, automatic transmission and transaxle, light vehicle diesel engines, manual drivetrain and axles, electronic systems, and engine performance.

Get the training and certification you need to have a much better chance of making a good living as an automotive technician in the state of Texas.
