How Much Does a Mechanic Make in Alaska?

Perhaps you have already done some training for automotive technician job, but want to boost your earning potential. This is probably why you are wondering how much a mechanic makes in Alaska. The answer may surprise you because the current median salary for mechanics in the US is from $31k to over $41k, for those in Alaska, though, the earnings are much higher.

What does a mechanic in Alaska earn each year? The median salary is $49k, while the highest earners take in a pretty shocking $72k per year. It is well known that an auto mechanic salary varies based on where that mechanic works and what sort of training and certification they have. It is unfortunate, but someone who is masterful with auto repair may not earn much because they have no certifications or formal training.

Training increases earning potential in Alaska

If you want to get one of the higher paying auto mechanic jobs in Alaska, you will need to obtain training. Currently, there are only six locations for automobile technician training within the state of Alaska, which may be why the salaries are higher.

The schools are all University of Alaska locations and they offer automobile technician training from six-month programs that give the student one type of certification but they also have an associate's degree program too. Taking the programs allows you to begin to build your level of expertise in auto repair or maintenance, and the longer the training, the better your financial results.

This is because all employers value specialized and in-depth education, knowledge and skill. Certifications from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, also known as ASE certifications are some of the most valuable. These come from testing and can be done through an employer or independently.

They cover nine specific areas that include brakes, engine repair, heating and air conditioning, manual drive train and axles, suspension, steering, electrical systems, engine performance, light vehicle diesel engines and automatic transmission. If you pass all of these exams and become certified, you will eventually reach the level of Master Mechanic, meaning your earnings increase too.

Training in a technical school outside of Alaska

Naturally, you can do your training outside of Alaska, and there are many institutions offering automobile technician and mechanic training. Top vocational and trade schools offer many classes, colleges do as well, and formal mechanic's schools tend to provide the most direct, focused and specialized training.

They ensure that training enables you to find auto mechanic jobs immediately, and are the result of classroom, online and hands-on learning. A top school for many mechanics and technicians is UTI Universal Technical Institute.

This is a 51-week program that provides automotive technology training, this school also offers Manufacturer Specific Advanced Training. This allows students to get factory-authorized for leading manufacturers such as BMW, Ford, Mercedes and more. Completing such programs can be done with the sponsorship of an Alaskan auto dealer and will boost earnings as well.
