Q: Squeaking Driveshaft.

asked by on January 18, 2017

Drive shaft squeaks with rotation in drive only. Replaced both U-joints. Still has same problem.

If you replaced the driveshaft joints and the shaft is still making noise when in drive then you may have binding joints. You may need to make sure the new joints are not binding from the installation. You can use a wooden block and hammer to hit the drive shaft near each joint cap. This will loosen the joint if it is binding.

I was told by a Honda Dealer that the axle seals must be replaced in the front. I want to get a second opinion.

The axle seals are pressed into the transaxle case and their purpose is simply to keep the transmission fluid from leaking out of the transmission (and keep dirt and water out of the transmission, too, of course). There is an...

Car rattles and shakes when the foot is off the gas.

There could be an issue with one or both CV Shafts. The outer bearing assembly on the CV Shafts could be damaged or out of grease causing the joints to stick on deceleration making the vehicle shake and rattle. Jack...

i have a knocking noise coming from under my feet on driver side by the tire and its a bottom knock right under the gas and brakes

Hi there. If your vehicle is a front wheel drive, then the noise could be a CV Shaft failing causing the knocking noise. If your vehicle is a 4x4, then the front driveshaft universal joints are worn and making the...

Concern wether my 2 front axles really needs replacement?

Generally, the leaking from the axle shaft area is caused when the boots crack and the fluid is leaked out. The tricky part about identifying this is knowing when the boots actually cracked, when they began leaking and to what...

I have a 2008 Chevy Cobalt and will be replacing both CV Axle Shafts. Do I have to get an alignment after?

In short no you do not as long as the lower ball joint is taken loose and not the strut bolts. If you loosen the strut bolts then you will need an alignment.

my car does not move in any gear

You've probably lost a CV joint. The CV joint is a joint that enables the front wheels to be under power even though they are steering. When the joint fails, the transmission looses its connection to the wheels so it...

I have a crunching/grinding noise when turning

If you have 4 wheel drive, the noise might be due to a failed outboard CV joint. Another possibility is brake interference or wheel bearing noise although if you had a defective wheel bearing you would normally hear the noise...

Why won't my car move when I put it in drive or reverse but when I stick it back in park all it does is grind

I'll bet you have a broken CV joint. The CV joint is the joint in the axle shafts that allows the front wheels to be under power when they are steering. When the joint fails, the axle is allowed to...

2006 nissan quest when put into gear or driving there's a loud clunk

One common cause of such noise is a failed outer CV joint on the CV axle. If you peer behind each front wheel, underneath the vehicle, and use a very bright focused light to shine on the rubber boots that...
