Unlike newer vehicles that use a cable to connect the shift lever in the car to the transmission, vehicles from your cars era use actual mechanical linkages for this. If the grommets that keep the linkages together and tight get loose or broken the shifter can get hard to work. A visual inspection of the linkages coming out of the steering column near the firewall can verify this. Considering the age of the vehicle, it might be difficult to find replacements. Consult with a mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic to determine why your car is hard to shift and how easy it will be to locate replacement parts.
