P2264 code definition

Water in Fuel Sensor Circuit

What the P2264 code means

P2264 is an OBD-II generic code for the engine control module (ECM) detecting the water in fuel sensor circuit voltage falling below or exceeding the specified limits.

What causes the P2264 code?

  • The engine control module (ECM) monitors the water in fuel circuit and has detected the return voltage to be above or below threshold limits for the sensor.

  • The water in fuel sensor is shorted to ground.

  • The water in fuel sensor is shorted to voltage.

  • The water in fuel sensor shorted to signal return.

  • The short can be in the sensor or the sensor wiring.

What are the symptoms of the P2264 code?

  • The Check Engine Light or water in fuel will be illuminated and the code is set in ECM/PCM memory as a fault.

  • The vehicle may run rough and misfire or stall if water is in the fuel.

How does a mechanic diagnose the P2264 code?

  • Scans for codes and documents the code in the ECM/PCM memory and looks at the freeze frame data for the problem before clearing the codes and retesting

  • Takes fuel samples to see if the fuel is contaminated or has water in it

  • Disconnects the water in fuel sensor to see if the water-in-fuel light goes out on the dashboard

  • Follows manufacture pinpoint tests to test the sensor and wiring. Different specifications for different applications will need to be followed.

Common mistakes when diagnosing the P2264 code?

  • Clearing ECM memory codes before checking the freeze frame data
  • Failing to clear the ECM codes after the repairs are done
  • Failing to verify the fuel is not contaminated before replacing the water in fuel sensor

How serious is the P2264 code?

Code P2264 is an indication that the ECM/PCM detects a problem with the water in fuel sensor circuit. If not fixed, then there would be no way to detect when the fuel has water and contaminants in it until proper repairs are done.

What repairs can fix the P2264 code?

  • Replace the water in fuel sensor
  • Clean out excessive fuel contamination or water in the fuel
  • Repair the wiring or connector to the water in fuel sensor circuit

Additional comments for consideration regarding the P2264 code

Code P2264 is to indicate the ECM/PCM cannot detect if there is water in the fuel or contamination of the fuel system due to a short in the water in fuel sensor circuit. The sensor and contamination are the two most common failures in the system.
