How to Get Smog Technician Certified in Rhode Island

The state of Rhode Island requires that all vehicles be inspected for both safety and emissions, or smog. There are several schedules of inspection that must be followed for different types of vehicles, but all used vehicles are required to be inspected within five days of a first-time Rhode Island registration; all new vehicles are required to be inspected within the first two years of registration, or when the vehicle reaches 24,000 miles, whichever comes first. For mechanics seeking an automotive technician job, an excellent way to build a resume of valuable skills is to seek out a smog inspector’s license.

Smog technician salary

Becoming a licensed smog technician can help a mechanic build experience in their career and have a well-rounded resume. One of the things that many mechanics wants to know is how a smog technician certification may change or enhance their auto mechanic salary. According to Salary Expert, smog technicians receive an average annual auto mechanic salary of $25,081 in Rhode Island.

Rhode Island smog check requirements

There are two different smog check schedules for vehicles according to the Rhode Island DMV:

  • Trucks up to 8,500 pounds: Must pass a safety and emissions test every 24 months.

  • All other non-commercial, non-motorcycle vehicles: Must pass a smog check inspection when the title changes hands, or when being newly registered.

Smog check procedure in Rhode Island

Rhode Island smog technicians use the inspection procedures recommended by the specific manufacturer of the vehicle. All emissions standards are kept updated by the Department of Revenue, according to each manufacturer and engine design. These standards are used to pass or fail vehicles during a smog check. If a vehicle does not meet the emissions standards, or the exhaust system is defective and therefore cannot be smog checked, the vehicle will be rejected.
