How Long Does a Dome Light Bulb Last?

Dome Light Bulb

The dome light bulb is located on the ceiling of your vehicle and is also called the courtesy light. It normally turns on and off when you enter and exit the vehicle. This automatic switch can be turned off if you do not want the light to illuminate when you open the door to the vehicle. In addition, the dome light can be turned on as you are going down the road with just the flip of a switch. The dome light is a safety feature as it helps you locate the ignition to your vehicle, your seatbelt, and other important items you need before you drive away.

There are many different types of dome lights depending on the make and model of your vehicle. If you decide to purchase one on your own, be sure to check your owner’s manual to ensure you are purchasing the correct type of dome light. If you are unsure what type of bulb you need or you don’t know how to replace it, contact a professional mechanic. They will replace your dome light bulb and inspect the electrical system to ensure everything is working properly.

Older model vehicles mostly use incandescent lighting. Newer vehicles are starting to move towards LED lights, and this includes using them for dome light bulbs. LED bulbs use less energy, last longer, and are brighter than the traditional incandescent light bulbs. In addition, there are different color light bulbs that are available to put in the interior of your vehicle. It is important to check with local and state regulations as this may be illegal in some areas.

The dome light bulb will go bad after a certain time, whether it burns out, the wiring goes bad, or there is another problem with it. Since this can happen, you should be aware of the symptoms the dome light bulb gives off before it completely fails.

Signs your dome light bulb needs to be replaced include:

  • The dome light will not work at all, when you flip the switch or open the doors
  • The dome light bulb is dim and not as bright as it used to be
  • The dome light bulb flickers

If you notice any above symptoms for your dome light bulb, you can contact a certified mechanic to make sure they have this problem resolved.
