What is the Exhaust Manifold all about?

Depending on your engine and type of vehicle, the exhaust manifold can either be a set of pipes or it can be a cast iron manifold assembly. Essentially the exhaust manifold takes the burned exhaust gases from the engine’s cylinders and ejects the gas through the exhaust system and out through the car's tail pipe. The exhaust gases are the burned fuel/air residue from the combustion process in the cylinders of the engine. Over time, the constant expansion and contraction of the components (caused by constant heating and cooling in the engine), may cause the manifold to crack and leak. These leaks can be hazardous as hot exhaust gases escape and can damage other components in the engine compartment. A leaky exhaust manifold can also impact engine performance.

Keep in mind:

Sometimes an exhaust manifold starts to leak because a mounting bolt has broken. If this happens, the mechanic will have to remove the broken bolt or stud, which can increase the labor time needed to fix the problem. Your mechanic may charge you an additional fee, depending on the severity of the situation.

How it's done:

Determine if the manifold is cracked or broken.
Remove and replace faulty exhaust manifold.
Inspect exhaust studs, clean carbon and old gasket off cylinder head.
Install new gasket and exhaust manifold.
Start engine and check for exhaust leaks.

The exhaust manifold is transferring burned gasses from the engine. It is located in a high temperature zone, and it will leak eventually. There is no way to prevent it. Your mechanic should use anti-seize compound on the bolts when they are replacing this part. This will help prevent bolts from breaking in the cylinder head.

This review is about the customer service at YourMechanic which is absolutely TERRIBLE (not Melvin). If the owners and investors in this business new Alex was offering such poor customer service, their heads would be spinning. I don't even know where to start. 1) The Groupon price was not matching up with the price on their website. It was still charging me $43. I called them, no one picked up. No one EVER picks up. They have to call you back. So Alex calls me and reduces the price by $20 - and says the remaining extra $23 is because my car uses extra oil. I never pay extra for this at other shops, but I end up paying 50% more for the extra oil here. Whatever, I guess I can live with that. 2) The mechanic calls me at 2pm and says he is waiting on an oil truck or something. My appointment is at 3pm. I don't hear from him. I call him at 4pm, no answer, I leave a voicemail. I call him again 20 minutes later, he picks up. Says he might be able to come out by 6pm. I call YourMechanic, of course, no answer. Alex calls me back and says this is out of his control. The mechanic finally shows up at 5:52pm. Nearly 3 hours alter. My whole day was wasted scheduling and waiting around. 3) I now find out that the tire rotation can't be done because he doesn't have the proper equipment. Alex calls me back. I coordinate giving my phone to the mechanic so he can explain what happened to Alex. For all of this pain and suffering, Alex offered me... Wait for it... A $5 discount! I paid $23 extra for the oil. I didn't get the tire rotation (worth $20). And the mechanic showed up 3 hours late. This is a terrible service with the worst customer support (YES, YOU ALEX) - Do Not Use Them! CC: Art Agrawal, Y Combinator, SV Angel, Yuri Milner, Andreessen Horowitz, Launch Capital, SoftTech VC, CrunchFund and Ashton Kutcher.
