What is the Fuel Pump Shut Off Switch all about?

In either a front end or rear end collision, it is possible for the fuel lines to crack or break and leak fuel. In the event the fuel lines were leaking, it would be unsafe for the fuel pump to continue operating. Many vehicle manufacturers have designed an inertia switch that shuts off the fuel pump when a vehicle comes to a sudden stop. This inertia switch is usually located near the airbag module and has a reset button. If the button on the Fuel Pump Shut Off Switch suddenly switches off without being in a collision, it can be pressed to reset.

Keep in mind:

  • A Fuel Pump Shut Off Switch that repetitively trips needs to be replaced with a new switch.
  • If the Fuel Pump Shut Off Switch tripped at the time of an accident, have the vehicle’s fuel system inspected before continuing to operate the vehicle.

How it's done:

  • The fuel pump shutoff switch is verified that it needs to be replaced. The trim panels are removed as needed for access.

  • The defective fuel pump shutoff switch is disconnected and removed.

  • The new fuel pump shutoff switch is installed and connected.

  • The fuel pump pressure is verified to ensure proper functionality. The trim access panels are installed.

  • The vehicle is road tested for proper operation.

Our recommendation:

Have the Fuel Pump Shut Off Switch replaced if it resets more than twice. This usually indicates that the switch is faulty as the engine dies while driving. If the vehicle has been involved in an accident that caused the Fuel Pump Shut Off Switch to turn off, reset the switch once you have confirmed the fuel system doesn’t have any leaks.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Fuel Pump Shut Off Switch?

  • Engine turns over but does not start
  • Engine dies while driving and does not restart

How important is this service?

If a faulty Fuel Pump Shut Off switch is not replaced, your vehicle may turn off while driving in traffic, causing a hazard to you and the vehicles around you.
