What are spark plugs and how do they work?

A spark plug is a precision-manufactured electrical device that passes a very high voltage pulse across two electrodes. The ignition system in your car generates very high voltage, as much as 50,000 volts. As that high voltage flows to each plug, the path to ground is interrupted by the spark plug gap, which varies depending on the engine. The voltage is high enough to jump that gap gauge and ignites the air-fuel mixture created. Like all engine components that operate in synchrony, the spark at each spark plug is timed to maximize power and efficiency and also to keep engine emissions as low as possible.

When to replace spark plugs:

  • Vehicle maintenance schedule. Spark plugs are a routine maintenance item, and should always be replaced according to the factory maintenance schedule.

If a spark is found to be faulty, it should be replaced, since it can cause any number of unfavorable symptoms, such as:

  • Difficulty starting your car.
  • Flashing check engine light.
  • Reduced fuel economy and/or power.
  • Rough idle and/or unexplained engine vibration.
  • Failed State emission testing.

Even if only one spark plug is found to be faulty, it is common to replace them all at that time.

How do mechanics replace spark plugs?

Spark plugs are threaded into the engine’s cylinder head(s). Most cars have one plug per cylinder, so a four-cylinder engine will have four plugs, a six-cylinder engine will have six plugs, and so forth. Not all the steps below apply to all cars, but the replacement procedure is as follows:

  • Determine correct plug based on OEM catalog, VIN, or underhood sticker.
  • Remove plastic engine cover, if applicable. Remove all components on top of the plug including coil-on-plug assemblies, spark plug wires, and so forth.
  • Unthread plug while the engine is cold.
  • Inspect removed plug to look for clues indicating any engine mis-operation exists; such as oil burning, excessively rich mixture, pre-ignition damage etc. Inform owner of any found unusual conditions.
  • Verify part numbers of new spark plugs. Adjust the gap to specification (if adjustable type), and install new plugs using a calibrated inch-pound torque wrench. Adjust torque if anti-seize is required on plug threads.
  • Finally, a road test of the vehicle to confirm normal operation.

Is it safe to drive with a spark plugs problem?

Yes, but spark plugs that are worn enough to cause engine-misfiring have the potential to cause engine damage and overheating of the catalytic converter. Generally, plug misoperation will not cause the engine to fail to run, but in cases of extreme wear, you may experience a limitation in the speed at which you can operate. If the maintenance schedule says the plugs should be replaced, it is best to do so promptly. Regardless of the age of the plugs, or elapsed mileage, if the engine misfires or runs poorly, the plugs should be inspected for defects.

When replacing spark plugs keep in mind:

  • High-speed driving may accelerate spark plug wear. Consider earlier than required inspection and tune-up if you operate the car in severe conditions.
  • The correct spark plug is critical for proper operation of your engine. Do not allow substitute part numbers. Always use brand name parts.
  • Never remove spark plugs from a hot engine.
  • Anti-seize compounds require that the OEM torque rating be adjusted downward. OEM torque assumes clean, dry spark plug threads with no lubricants.
  • Plugs should always be promptly replaced per the manufacturer maintenance schedule even if they appear to be working perfectly. If you delay replacement, the spark plug threads may weld themselves to the aluminum cylinder head, thus making later replacement very difficult and costly if the aluminum threads are damaged.
  • If your vehicle is equipped with spark plug wires (as opposed to a coil-on-plug system), the wires should be tested for electrical resistance at 100,000 miles or just replaced outright with new, name brand wires.
