What is the Power Steering Control Valve all about?

Power steering pumps create high pressure in order to push fluid through the system, into the power steering rack, and provide good handling. There are many different components that play critical roles in this process, and the power steering control valve is one of them. You might be more familiar with this as the flow-control valve.

In most setups, the power steering control valve is located at the outlet of the pump, where the fluid leaves the pump and enters the supply line. It regulates the pressure of the fluid in the line to the correct PSI. If the valve fails, the fluid pressure may become too low or too high. Excessive pressure can cause damage to the supply line, creating leaks and fire hazards (power steering fluid is flammable).

Keep in mind:

  • The power steering control valve is not part of any service or maintenance regimen.
  • It is not possible to check the valve for operation during basic maintenance, so it will only be inspected if there is a problem.
  • Failure of the control valve will create problems with steering and handling.
  • In most instances, valve failure will require replacement of the power steering pump itself.

How it's done:

  • The power steering control valve is checked for replacement
  • The power steering control valve is removed
  • The new power steering control valve is installed
  • The power steering system is refilled and checked for leaks
  • The engine is run and the power steering system operation is checked

Our recommendation:

While the power steering valve does not require any regular maintenance you may request that it is diagnosed if your car exhibits any of the symptoms. Your power steering system is an important component of your vehicle, ensuring simplified handling through all types of turns. However, a failing power steering control valve can cause drops in fluid pressure, creating harder steering. Have any malfunction or problem with your power steering system inspected by one of our expert mechanics immediately.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Power Steering Control Valve?

  • Hard steering at higher speeds
  • Whining noise during turning

How important is this service?

Your power steering system might not be as critical to vehicle operation as the engine and transmission, but it enhances safety and makes steering easier. If you notice any problems with your power steering system, have the vehicle inspected and the problem diagnosed as soon as possible.

Geo Metro L3-1.0L - Oil Change - Elk Grove, California
When I called on yourmechanic.com's service, I was a little nervous. I wasn't sure what to expect. Well, Kevin was so professional and he went beyond the call of duty too. When he was done, he did not pressure me or make me feel like I owed him anything more. He really loves what he does! Very thorough, especially when it came to other problems that he spotted in my engine. He was so organized. I was incredibly impressed. I teach private voice from home so as a result, it's hard to leave my house during work week hours. So frustrating. I know nothing about cars. All I know is music, so I need a mechanic I can trust, a mechanic who cares and a mechanic who will be completely honest with me. Kevin came to do a simple oil change. He respected the fact that I am a single woman who can't afford to get stranded in the middle of anywhere, so Kevin automatically stayed longer with my car. Wow! Why can't every mechanic be like Kevin? I am going to start calling him "Dr. Kevin", because within only an hour he diagnosed my little car with several other problems. He identified and explained clearly what those problems were while I was on break. He was so easy to understand. Like I said, I know very little about cars, I mean, he used layman terms so after he left, I confidently knew exactly what I needed to do in order to have my car completely ready to pass its next smog test. Great gentleman. Great personality. I felt so safe with him. I will surely be asking for Kevin next time I go to yourmechanic.com AND I will also highly recommend Kevin by name to my friends!

Geo Metro L3-1.0L - Check Engine Light is on - Campbell, California
While Whitney's testing equipment had difficulty reading the Geo's computer, rather than simply saying he couldn't do the job, Whitney manually troubleshot the likely cause. In addition, he cleaned out some parts to verify that cause. Whitney was courteous, knowledgeable, thorough and very trustworthy. I was very impressed by his professionalism and capability. I would recommend him and YourMechanic to anyone. I plan to use his services again for the repair.
