CV Axle / Shaft Assembly Replacement Service & Cost

What is the Axle/CV Shaft Assembly all about?

Axle shafts are commonly referred to as “CV axles” or “half-shafts.” An axle shaft is a narrow, pole-like part that connects a wheel to the gears in the transmission. Axles are part of the system that enables the wheels to rotate. One end of the axle shaft is connected to the transmission and the other end is connected to the wheel. The transmission rotates the axle shafts, which rotates the wheels. Without the axles, the tires will not rotate and the car will not move.

Axle shafts are comprised of four components: shaft, CV joints, grease and the boots (grease container). The most common reason for the axle to fail is because of the torn boots (grease leaking out). Without the grease, the CV joints will not get lubricated, dirt will enter the joint and the whole axle will eventually wear out.

Keep in mind:

  • Your car has multiple axle shafts, but in most cases only one will need to be replaced.
  • Even if the CV joints or boots are the only parts of the axle to fail, it is often recommended to replace the entire axle.

How it's done:

  • Verify the axle shaft needs to be replaced.
  • Remove wheel and replace faulty axle.
  • Torque all fasteners and wheels to factory specifications.
  • Check tire pressure.
  • Perform road test.

Our recommendation:

Every time you get a major service, the mechanic should perform a basic safety inspection that includes a visual inspection of the axles and boots. If there is grease found around the tires, it is likely that CV boots are leaking. Also, if you hear a loud clicking noise when you make a turn, it can mean that the axles are bad and need replacement.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Axle/CV Shaft Assembly?

  • Loud clicking noise in front or rear of the car when making a turn.
  • You may notice grease on the inner edges of the tires.
  • Vibration when driving.

How important is this service?

Axle shafts connect your transmission to your wheels. When you step on the gas pedal, the transmission gears turn the axle shafts, which then turn the wheels. Broken axle shafts will not rotate, and there will be no connection between your transmission and your wheels; as a result, your wheels will not move.

Tien

Tien has rapidly become one of my favorite people. During the first inspection I discovered he had worked on my car years ago at a BMW specialty shop. How cool to find someone familiar with my 30 year old vehicle. He always shows up, on time, prepared, friendly and follows through with his paperwork. I am very happy to have reconnected with Tien.

Robert

Robert is a good mechanic. He came on time and did a good job in replacing the gaskets. It's been two days I didn't see any oil leak. Though my only concern was after the repair Robert forgot to clean the spilled oil on the parking spot. I am not exactly sure, whether the mechanic is responsible for cleaning the already leaked oil on the engine and on engine splash shield. But I expected it be cleaned. Apart from cleaning the oil, he had done a great job. If the cleaning part is not his job, I will definitely give 4.5 stars for his repair. As I expected it be complete giving him 3 stars.

Emmette
31 years of experience
Emmette was fantastic! He arrived early. He changed my one of my ignition coils and all spark plugs. When doing so, he showed me an oil leak seeping into the plugs which he explained caused the short. A different repair shop I went to two days prior advised e to change all coils and plugs at a price of $1,100, They never once noticed the leaking oil under the failed coil (and all others). When my car sputtered a bit on initial start up, Emmette insisted I take it for a ride while he waited for my return. He did so to ensure that the repair worked and I was satisfied. Emmette also inspected my entire car on his own accord. He sprayed a squeaky door, adjusted my tire pressure which was excessive (55 lbs of pressure instead of 32 in all 4 tires. This excess was done by a dedicated "tire" shop when they put my new tires on...What the heck!). He also fixed a bent gas cap (which is likely the cause of 2 EVAP leak codes). He did so at no charge, whereas the other shops wanted to replace major EVAP parts at yet another $1, 500. So far, no EVAP code has returned. I was a bit apprehensive having an unkown mechanic outside of a physical shop do the work on my BMW Z3. However after my exceptional experience with Emmette, I'm going to hire him to replace an expansion hose and to further diagnose and fix the oil leak he found.
