A Buyer’s Guide to the 2012 Toyota Corolla

toyota corolla 2012

Not only does the 2012 Toyota Corolla continue to be one of the best-selling compact sedans in the United States, but it also continues to maintain very high resale values. If you want a car that you’ll get your money’s worth out of and that you can then sell or trade in at a great rate, you can’t go wrong with a Corolla.

Key Features

Among the many features that the 2012 Corolla has, we especially like the ability to control your music via controls on the steering wheel. And, with the USB iPod input on the LE and S models, you can play anything you like on your iPod without taking your hands off the wheel. Another great comfort feature is the adjustable steering wheel for enhanced comfort on long trips.

Changes for 2012

In 2012, Toyota gave the L, LE, and S trims upgrades. The L’s new features included power windows with an auto-down feature on the driver’s window, power side mirrors, and keyless entry. The LE trim gained 16-inch alloy wheels and the audio steering wheel controls we mentioned above, and the LE and S trims both got new sound systems with Bluetooth connectivity and USB iPod interface.

What We Like

Though the Corolla remains a very affordable compact sedan, it now has more features than ever before. When driving any of these models, you could forget entirely that you’re driving an economy car. Plus, the fuel efficiency is great, so you can save money by driving a 2012 Corolla, too.

What Concerns Us

Honestly, even though it has gotten updated designs over the past few years, the Corolla is still not as stylish or attractive as some of the competition. While it maintains high resale values for now, it may not be able to stand up against other manufacturers’ comparable models in the future.

Available Models

Whether you choose the L, LE, or S for your 2012 Toyota Corolla, you’ll get the same engine package, which comes in either automatic or manual:

  • Engine – 1.8-liter 4-cylinder
  • Power – 132 HP at 6000 RPM
  • Torque – 128 lb-ft at 4400 RPM
  • Fuel economy (MPG city/highway) – 26/34 (automatic), 27/34 (manual)

Major Recalls

Some 2012 models have been recalled because they may not have had the correct calibration testing on the passenger seat occupant sensing system. The recall involves inspection and repair before returning the vehicle to the owner.

Common Issues

The Corolla is a largely reliable car, and the most common issues involve brakes squealing or vibrating. These issues can be solved with the dealer or with any auto mechanic who is experienced with Corollas and with tuning brakes.
