A Buyer’s Guide to the 2012 Chevrolet Colorado

The 2012 Chevrolet Colorado is the perfect size pickup for running errands on the weekend and doing light duty chores around the yard. For those who don’t need a full size pickup, the Colorado offers almost everything a full size has, but without the price tag.

Key Features

The Chevrolet Colorado has a 2.9 liter four cylinder engine with a five speed manual transmission. It offers 185 hp at 5,600 rpm with a fuel economy of 18 mpg while city driving and 25 mpg while driving on the highway. The Colorado can tow between 1,900 and 5,500 pounds.

Changes for 2012

The 1LT trims gets a Power Convenience Package where the 2LT trims receive front bucket seats. A manual transmission is no longer offered in the LT models, and the 5.3 liter V8 engine is not offered on the 1LT model anymore. A locking rear differential is standard on the 2LT, 3LT, and 1LT 4x4 models now.

What We Like

The 2012 Chevrolet Colorado has solid chassis while still getting good fuel economy. The side curtain airbags are a nice safety feature to have on the vehicle. In addition, the truck rides smoothly around town and even has a package option to go off-road.

What Concerns Us

The Colorado is not was wide as its competition, such as the Dakota or Tacoma, and it also doesn’t provide much legroom for the back passengers either. For those looking to tow heavy loads, the Colorado may not be the best option.

Available Models

The 1LT offers a 2.9 liter four cylinder engine with a four speed automatic transmission. It has 185 hp with a fuel economy of 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg in the highway. The 2LT has a 3.7 liter five cylinder engine with a four speed automatic transmission. It offers 242 hp with a fuel economy of 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. The 3LT offers a 5.3 liter V8 with a four speed automatic transmission. It has 300 hp with a fuel economy of 14 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway.

Major Recalls

In 2012, the Colorado was recalled due to the hood may be missing a secondary latch. This could cause the hood to open while the vehicle is going down the road. The Colorado was also recalled because of loose electrical connections on the driver seatbelt buckle, which can cause the warning not to sound.

Common Info

Common consumer complaints include the door ajar warning going off, the interior lights coming on, the brake pedal being soft, catalytic converter cracked and doors leaking.
