What is the Emergency/Parking Brake Cable all about?

The parking brake cable is a thin, steel cable that connects the parking brake lever to the parking brake shoes. It is located underneath the car. When you pull the lever, this cable enables the parking brake shoes to press against the rotor or the drum, creating the friction that keeps the car from rolling. It is just like using the brake pedal, but in this case, you are using the parking brake cable instead of brake fluids to apply the pressure. Over time the cable can rust and break. If the parking brake cable is broken, the car will roll even when the parking brake has been engaged.

Keep in mind:

The brake drums or pads often need to be removed to access the emergency brake cable. During this time, the drums and pads should be inspected to see if they also need to be replaced.

How it's done:

  • Remove and replace parking brake cable.
  • Adjust parking brake.
  • Test parking brake.

Our recommendation:

Always apply the parking brake when the car is parked. This will keep the parking brake adjusted properly. Your mechanic should inspect the parking brake cable during every brake service. They should also periodically spray rust penetrant chemical on the cable to prevent rust from building up.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Emergency/Parking Brake Cable?

  • Parking brake does not hold car.
  • Parking brake does not release.
  • Parking brake warning light is on.

How important is this service?

All services associated with proper function of your brakes are important. In addition to safety issues, ignoring small repairs can quickly lead to more serious (and more expensive) problems.

Toyota Yaris L4-1.5L - Brake Pads Replacement (Rear) - San Pablo, California
Thank you, Joshua!! I've taken my car to the dealership for tune-ups ever since I bought it in 2006. They overcharge but I never had time to research a new mechanic, much less take it somewhere new. The last time I took my car in, the dealership said I needed some work done and quoted me a BIG price. Based on a friend's review here, I made an appt w/ YourMechanic and am VERY pleased. Not only did he do great work, he was very knowledgeable, easy to talk to and did the work for a third of the dealership's quote. I already recommended YourMechanic and Joshua to my dad.

Michael arrived early and performed services in a timely and efficient manner. When a part was need for a quick repair he sourced it locally and quickly. He gave me advice on what other work needs to be done and when. Despite his great service my check engine light is still on and hope to return to him to resolve it
