What is the Accelerator Cable all about?

The driver controls the speed or acceleration of the car with the help of the accelerator cable, or throttle cable. This cable forms a connection between the accelerator pedal and the throttle body. It has an outer casing made of metal and rubber, while the inner cable is built with metal wire. With repeated use and friction, the accelerator cable can become worn out and ragged, and becomes more susceptible to breaking. Keep an eye out for signs that indicate that you must replace the accelerator cable.

Keep in mind:

  • If the accelerator cable is broken or frayed, it cannot relay the signal to the engine. The engine, in turn, cannot open the butterfly valves and pump oxygen into the carburetor.
  • The accelerator cable might not perform optimally because of slack. Our mechanic will examine it carefully and check for signs of wear. If there aren’t any, they could eliminate the problem by simply tightening it.

How it's done:

  • The vehicle hood is raised and supported
  • The defective accelerator cable is removed
  • The new accelerator cable is installed
  • The throttle is exercised to make it operates smoothly without binding
  • The vehicle hood is closed and road tested for proper operation

Our recommendation:

It is advisable to get a mechanic to check the accelerator cable in your car if you notice the accelerator is abnormally inflexible and does not come back up right away. If you face a situation where the accelerator stops responding and you’re driving on a busy road, use the remaining momentum you have to pull over to the side of the road. Call and schedule an appointment with YourMechanic to fix this problem.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Accelerator Cable?

  • Need to press down hard on the accelerator for response
  • Engine does not respond immediately when you push down on the accelerator
  • Car jerking during cruise mode

How important is this service?

A faulty or broken accelerator cable can result in your car coming to complete halt in the middle of traffic or worse, on an incline. Typically, accelerator cables are highly durable, but you should request a mechanical inspection every six months to ensure that it remains in perfect working order.

Nissan Maxima V6-3.5L - Car is not starting - Gaithersburg, Maryland
Robert never showed up to my very first appointment booked with him on 10/29/20 at 9 am so I had to call the company and inquire as to where he was, and to check and see if he was still coming. Robert finally texted me at 10:17 am informing me that he had cell phone issues. I would have preferred to receive a call a half an hour prior to my appointment or even afterwards so I could have went on about my day without waiting clueless as to if he was going to show. My appointment was then rescheduled for Monday 11/2/20 at 4:39 pm. Once again I encountered the same exact thing. Robert was having cell phone issues once again, but this time he claimed he left it an Uber. This time I was upset and really didn't want my car to be serviced by him at all and requested another mechanic. Unfortunately there was none available so I had to stick with Robert. My appointment was rescheduled a third time on Friday 11/6/20 but this time Robert actually showed up and on time to my surprised. He ended up performing my inspection on the battery installed previously by another mechanic and it turned out to be the issue for my car not starting. Robert turned out to be a very quiet and polite young man and did a good job. I stood outside and wiped down my car as he performed the check on my battery and checked for any other issues in reference to my engine only. He showed me the readings he received from his mechanical device that read the Battery Cells and Alternator, then pointed out how it was my battery and not the Alternator like I assumed. I really did appreciated it. Robert never completed the entire 50 Point Inspection like I was informed, but rather just on the battery to see if it was related to previous services I had received by another mechanic. I was charged for the inspection as if the issues was related to another problem that caused my car not to start and that wasn't the case. My car wouldn't start of even hold a charge after Robert charged it because it was due to the battery so I should not have been charged at all since the service was still under warranty. I had to call for a refund and still right today 11/10/20 I haven't received.
